Google has started rolling out the Android Auto 15.9 beta update to users enrolled in the beta program. While the update does not introduce any noticeable user-facing changes, it strongly suggests that new features are currently in development and may arrive in future releases.
Although beta users can install the update directly from the Play Store—or sideload the APK to access it early—most users are advised to wait for the stable rollout, as the current build appears to focus mainly on backend improvements.
Google Cast May Be Coming to Android Auto
One of the most interesting discoveries in the Android Auto 15.9 beta is a hint at Google Cast support. The latest build (version 15.9.655104) includes a newly added string within the Media Router framework that references Google Cast in relation to a car.
Google Cast has been available on Android Automotive OS for several months, and this development suggests that Google may be preparing to extend the feature to Android Auto as well. While there is no confirmed timeline, the presence of these strings indicates active development behind the scenes.
Material 3 Expressive Design Coming to Media Player
In addition to Google Cast references, the update also points to upcoming visual changes. The Android Auto Media Player is expected to receive Material 3 Expressive Design, bringing a more modern and dynamic interface.
Google introduced Material 3 Expressive Design with the stable release of Android 16, and it began appearing on Android Auto a few weeks later. However, not all parts of the interface have adopted the new design yet.

According to screenshots shared by Android Authority, the refreshed design will soon extend to:
- The full music app interface
- The music control widget on Android Auto
Although Google has not announced an official release date, the company has been teasing this redesign since May, suggesting a broader rollout could happen soon.
