Google Revisits Android OS Update Support for Pixel Devices

Google continues to lead the Android ecosystem when it comes to long-term software support. Over the years, the company has not only increased the number of updates promised to new devices but has also quietly extended support for older Pixel models. One device that initially missed out—the Pixel Tablet—has now received a welcome upgrade in its support timeline.

Google’s Android Update Policy: How It Evolved

The first Pixel smartphones powered by Google’s in-house Tensor chip debuted with the Pixel 6 series. At launch, these devices were promised 3 years of Android OS updates alongside 5 years of security patches.

Everything changed in 2023 with the launch of the Pixel 8 series, when Google stunned the industry by announcing 7 years of Android OS and security updates. This policy has since remained in place for newer Pixel models.

Interestingly, during the Android 16 developer preview, the Pixel 6 Pro appeared on the supported devices list. This was unexpected, as many believed its Android OS updates would end with Android 15. Google has now confirmed that Android OS support for the Pixel 6 series has been extended to 5 years, aligning it with the previously promised security update timeline.

Pixel Tablet Now Gets 5 Years of OS and Security Updates

The Pixel Tablet has also benefited from this revised support strategy. Google has updated its official support page, extending the Pixel Tablet’s update policy to 5 years of Android OS and security patches.

This means the Pixel Tablet will now receive updates until June 2028, instead of the previously listed June 2026—a significant improvement for current and future owners.

With this move, Google reinforces its commitment to long-term device support—and the Pixel Tablet lineup may yet benefit from renewed interest.
