Google is working on many things for Android Auto, including YouTube support. It has been months since the company announced that it would be bringing YouTube for Android Auto. Unfortunately, what people are reporting isn’t exactly what was promised, but perhaps progress is being made.

Usually, Android Auto handles all the audio playing on your phone. It doesn’t always give additional controls for that. Over the past few months, more apps have been shown to function through Android Auto’s media controls, and now YouTube for Android has been added to the list.
The new YouTube for Android Auto support comes after a recent update to the YouTube app. We understand it’s available for beta and stable users with multiple devices, accounts, and app versions reporting the support.
Again, this is not a YouTube app functioning on Android Auto, as you can’t play videos or see a full screen of media controls. You see YouTube on the dashboard media widget with the ability to play/pause and skip forward to the next video. Skipping is for a full video skip, and the same action applies to the steering wheel controls.
Unfortunately, you need a premium subscription to enjoy this new addition. Background play only works for premium subscribers and you need one if you are the type that loves listening to podcasts, and even YouTube videos that are great audio-only listen while on the move. Nevertheless, Google will still release the YouTube for Android Auto they promised months ago.
