Google Messages users are reporting that the app crashes a few seconds after opening. It’s an issue that started yesterday and has been attributed to the recent update released some days ago.
Google Messages can be found on almost all Android phones. It makes sense why the app crashing has been getting so much attention. According to those affected, launching the Google Messages app to the homepage closes the app after a few seconds. So far, replying through notifications or chat head/bubble works successfully.
Details of Google Messages crashing on Android

We understand the issue is associated with the latest beta update version 20250805_00_RC00. It was released a few days ago. While Android 16 users on Pixel and Samsung phones are mostly affected, we understand that other Android users are experiencing the same bug. Some Xiaomi users have their Google Messages app crashing after launching it, but there is a workaround.
Clearing the cache and restarting the device has worked for many people, and we recommend trying it out if you have the same issue. Additionally, you can head to App info and uninstall the latest update from the three-dot overflow menu in the top-right corner. Reports suggest reinstalling the update resolves the problem, but your message history is wiped.
