Google has begun rolling out the Android Auto 16.8 stable update. It means the beta program was successful, and now everyone can install the update. Unfortunately, no changelog, so it’s difficult to say what has been fixed. We recommend installing the update as it prepares the app for new additions.

Google has been working on new features for Android Auto, including Widgets. Perhaps they will officially announce the availability at the upcoming I/O event scheduled in the coming days, given that traces of it were detected in the last beta build. We believe the company is still preparing for a public rollout, as some people can configure it with third-party launchers.
Google plans to do things differently, which is probably why this has taken so much time. We understand the company wants the widgets displayed alongside the rest of the Android Auto UI. Of course, that’s a lot of work given the small screen available for this. Hopefully, they will find a way for users to place these widgets without clustering their infotainment screen.
While we are waiting for the full deployment of widgets, we recommend installing Android Auto 16.8 stable. Google is rolling it out via the Play Store, but you can install the APK file without visiting the Play Store. So far, we have not seen any bug reports about the new build. We recommend installing it, especially if you are facing any issues using the app.
